A meeting was held at the National Press Club, Islamabad by the SPARC (Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child) on Thursday. According to Khalil Ahmed Dogar, Program Manager SPARC, Pakistan was the sixth overall, and first Muslim country in the world to sign the UNCRC (a standard for measuring child rights) 30 years ago. He said infrastructural reforms are required to uplift the Pakistani children’s living standards. Pakistan ranks very low on most of the child-welfare related indicators of the Millenium Development goals.
There are 22.84 million children in Pakistan who are out of school. This figure is the second-highest in the world. 12 million children are involved in hazardous works and labor force. 1.2 million children are working and living on the streets. He said, all the political parties must unite and make all-out efforts to ensure that Pakistani children have an exploitation-free bright future.
