On Wednesday 3rd March 2021 senate elections were held in Pakistan. As a result, the ruling party PTI suffered a huge blow in Islamabad. Mr. Yousaf Raza Gillani of the PPP (Pakistan Peoples Party) won the seat of the senator from Islamabad. He defeated Mr. Hafeez Sheikh of PTI in the senate elections by 5 seats. Mr. GIllani was the candidate of the joint opposition, and he won 169 votes. Whereas Mr. Sheikh won 164 votes. Seven votes were rejected that were cast for the general seat from Islamabad.
As always, this senate election was also marred by controversies. Just hours before the voting started, a leaked video of Ali Haider, son of Mr. Gillani, was unearthed in which he was seen with some lawmakers from PTI. A few weeks earlier, PTI proposed senate elections must be conducted through open balloting, but it was opposed by the opposition. On Monday, Supreme Court also ruled in favor of secret balloting under Article 226 of the constitution of Pakistan. ECP (Election Commission of Pakistan) conducted elections under the ruling of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
